Common Questions

Is Marcus Montessori Academy a registered school?
Yes. We are registered as a private school with the Nova Scotia Department of Education. A curriculum and learning outcomes are submitted to the province each year. Students are on the books as enrolled in a private school — equivalent to homeschooling under a registered institution. Formal government oversight doesn't come into effect until Grade 11, but our reporting and curriculum commitments are maintained from the start.
What curriculum is used?
The Montessori method, adapted to this program. Our curriculum covers Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Geography, Zoology, Botany, Advanced Practical Life, and Peace Education. A detailed curriculum document and annual learning outcomes are submitted to the province each August. See our Curriculum page for the full breakdown of what children learn in each subject area.
Why only 5 students?
This is intentional. Starting small allows us to build strong routines and systems around a real group of children before growing. The Montessori method works best with individualized attention — a small cohort makes that possible. As the program matures, we will expand enrollment. Grades 4, 5, and 6 will be added to the curriculum as the initial class grows.
Does my child need to have attended a Montessori program before?
No prior Montessori experience is required. Children who join at Pre-Primary or Primary age adapt quickly to the materials and the self-directed work style. The mixed-age classroom also helps — younger children follow older students and pick up the routines naturally.
Is before and after school care included?
Before and after school care is available at the same location. The school day and the care program run at 250 Beaver Bank Road — so your child's day is entirely in one place, with the same people and the same environment from drop-off to pickup.
What about transportation?
We offer school pickup from local schools and home pickup and drop-off within the local area, the same as our after-school program. Call us to discuss your specific transportation needs.
