Montessori Elementary School
A registered private school for Pre-Primary through Grade 3 · Ages 4–8 · Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia
More Than a Classroom
Marcus Montessori Academy now offers a full private elementary school program for Pre-Primary through Grade 3. We operate as a registered private school with the Nova Scotia Department of Education — a genuine alternative to the public system, in the same location you already know and trust.
This is not a tutoring program or enrichment add-on. It is a complete school day grounded in the Montessori method — where children learn math, language, science, geography, zoology, botany, and peace education through hands-on materials, real projects, and meaningful experience.
Before and after-school care is available at the same address, making the transition seamless for working families.
How We Teach
Three principles shape everything that happens in our school.
Mixed-Age Learning
Pre-Primary through Grade 3 learn together in one classroom. Older children teach younger ones — building leadership and communication skills. Younger children absorb concepts faster by watching and following. Every child progresses at their own pace.
Movement-Based
Children need to move. We use yoga balls instead of chairs, take classrooms outside on good days, and do lessons in the woods. Movement stimulates the brain and improves memory — so learning doesn't stop when kids can't sit still. It gets better.
Whole Child Approach
We go beyond reading, writing, and math. Peace education, community service, practical life skills, financial literacy, handwriting, and independent research are all part of the curriculum. We are building people, not test scores.
What Children Learn
Our curriculum covers six areas, presented as a progression rather than a grade-by-grade syllabus. Every child advances through each area at their own pace.
Concrete bead boards, strip boards, snake games — from addition through division and fractions. Mental math drills build speed and fluency.
Grammar symbols, sentence structure with physical materials, penmanship, descriptive writing, and creative storytelling.
Hands-on experiments with circuits, batteries, and bulbs. Human anatomy (digestive, skeletal systems). Classification and observation.
Taught outside as much as possible. Farm visits, aquarium trips, visual timelines of human civilization, weather, and earth layers.
Year-long sewing projects, cooking real meals, caring for animals and the garden, and banking skills through a Royal Bank partnership.
The Peace Flower: four petals of awareness — self, community, culture, and environment. Sound therapy, mindfulness, and active community service.
Now Enrolling for September 2026
We are deliberately starting with a small, intimate cohort. Two spots have already been filled. If you are interested in the remaining spaces, reach out soon — we are currently advertising to fill the class before September.
The Classroom Is Everywhere
Our school is at 250 Beaver Bank Road — the same address as our after-school program. But the classroom isn't always indoors. On warm or good-weather days, we move outside. Into the yard. Into the woods. On hikes with portable whiteboards and hiking chairs.
Children who can't sit still in a traditional classroom often thrive here. Movement is built into learning — not treated as a problem to manage. The environment adapts to the child, not the other way around.
